A Christmas Dock

Are you still using the tired old approach to PC docking? Have you figured out how to dock an Ultra Book, tablet, or Macbook? What about phones too?

This time of the year The DocKtor is retold of the Dickens novel, “A Christmas Carol”. Below is a shorter version of the story, adapted for docking stations, and with you (IT Professional) as the hero. The story ends with you having a magnificent Christmas.

The Cast

Bob Cratchet………………………………………………………………………….…………………IT Profesional

Tiny Tim……………………………………………………………………………………………………………The User

Scrooge…………………………………………………………………………….…………..The Proprietary OEM

The DocKtor…………………………………………………………………..…….Ghost of Christmas Present

You (The Hero)……………………………………………………….……Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come

Ghost of Docking Past

For new hires and at each refresh, Bob would purchase a proprietary snap-in/snuggle-up/hugging docking station specific to the laptop being deployed. Tiny Tim might know the dock could be used not only to power and charge his laptop, but also to add a second external monitor. He would connect the laptop to the dock’s proprietary connector often with the laptop lid closed. Scrooge supplied the proprietary approach that: 1) locked out the competition since Tiny Tim could not use the dock with any other brand of laptop, 2) enabled vendor lock which in turn led to higher pricing, 3) increased the dollar amount (and accelerated the margin) of the per user sale and 4) permitted a monopoly where Scrooge sold a new high price/margin dock each time a laptop refresh occurred because proprietary docks couldn’t be used even with the Scrooge’s other or newer models.

In these dark days Bob Cratchit had no other choice. He would specify and then buy a proprietary dock for each new model or vendor PC without even thinking about the e-waste, let alone the money wasted, on docks that were only used only for a little while and only with a particular model laptop. This also complicated support because Bob had to remember which dock went with which laptop when the inevitable support tickets came in. Bob’s buyer also had to spread out lower quantities amongst several models if not brands of docks and thus couldn’t negotiate lower pricing with Scrooge, especially considering the afore mentioned vendor lock.

Ghost of Chistmas Present

Today Bob can obtain a single model Universal Docking Station from Targus that works with any Windows PC. The version doesn’t matter, XP, 7, 8, 8.1, or 10, in all their flavors, Home, Professional, Enterprise, 32, or 64-bit. Tiny Tim’s PC can be a laptop, desktop, ultra-book, tablet, cube, orb, or any other form factor. Tiny Tim can use this same dock with a Macbook running OS X 10.6 through 10.10 (Yosemite). This means that once invested in a Targus Universal Docking solution, it’s the last dock that will ever be needed.  It works with today’s laptops and tomorrow’s, through several refreshes, and even complete re-equipping to other models within a manufacturer, or even changing laptop manufacturer’s from Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Apple, etc.

Top Ten advantages of using Targus Universal Docking Stations:

  1. No more throwing away the old docking station when a new laptop vendor or current vendor’s unit is brought in at refresh or for new hires.  Way less e-waste for Tiny Tim and Bob’s growing company.
  2. Way less waste of Bob’s money and time buying docks that only work with one PC model or brand.  One dock for the rest of Tiny Tim’s long company life, future proof.
  3. No more cutting large dollar PO’s to Scrooge for docking solutions.
  4. Support both BYOD and CYOD.  Imagine no more help desk tickets for the multitude of BYOD devices.
  5. Take up zero desk-space.  Targus wedge shape enable better laptop cooling and reliability too.
  6. Enable Strategic IT and new applications to save resources and be green while saving green $ i.e. Shared Workspace.
  7. One docking solution for any PC/MacBook simplifies IT support.  Bob no longer has to worry about having the correct dock for the PC or MacBook in question.  The Targus docks work with any.
  8. Less SKU to keep on hand for new hires.  Targus docks are laptop agnostic, use what you want.
  9. Quality and Reliability of docking stations are mature and improving.  Many times the Targus Universal Docking Stations are more reliable than the PC Tiny Tim is connecting them to.
  10. WW Ghost of Christmas Present (aka DocKtor) support.  There is now an Americas West and Americas East DocKtor, an APAC DocKtor, and an EMEA DocKtor.

Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come

What if you could offer your users one dock that can be used with their device no matter if it is a Windows PC, OS X Macbook, or Android phone? Imagine you, as Bob Cratchit enabling Tiny Tim to need and use only one device, of his choosing, for work or at home. Imagine, you are the hero that determined how Targus Universal Docking Stations enabled the lowest cost, money saving, highest productivity, and even green solutions your company needs. Imagine, you get the raise and the praise for bringing in Targus Universal Docking Stations. Imagine, that raise supports you buying anything your wife and kids desire for Christmas.
